Lavender Oil for Anxiety: Finally We Have Some Hard Facts (2020)
Lavender Essential Oil is one of the most common essential oils on the market today and is particularly popular among aromatherapists. While it has been common understanding for centuries that lavender oil helps those with anxiety, only recently has some hard evidence emerged.
Back in 2018, researchers in Japan concluded that
lavender oil does have a calming effect in mice.
Dr Hideki Kashiwadani explained: "In folk medicine, it has long been believed that odorous compounds derived from plant extracts can relieve anxiety". Modern medicine has often overlooked these scents, despite a need to develop alternative drugs that are safer than what we have at the moment.
What was especially encouraging from the study was that the mice were observed not to have any impairment in movement - a hallmark of sedative drugs such as benzodiazepines.
A previous study in 2012 observed that aromatherapy techniques using lavender essential oil did lower anxiety in high-risk postpartum women. This study looked at ~30 women who had given birth in the last 18 months and who had undergone aromatherapy sessions using lavender essential oil.
They found that lavender oils lowered both anxiety levels and depression in the women in the study.
Now a Research Paper released in December 2019 has looked at hundreds of previous trials and studies into the effects of lavender essential oil.
The Paper concluded that there is a general trend that taking lavender essential oil either by ingesting or by inhaling does reduce anxiety levels.
We can expect further research to take place to determine the exact reasons behind why lavender essential oil helps to cure anxiety. We can't wait to learn more.
